Getting To Shetland

By Air

There are several flights a day, departing from the mainland Scotland including Aberdeen, Glasgow, Inverness and Edinburgh.  Connecting flights are also available from most major cities – nationally and European.  Flight from Bergen to Shetland are also available during the summer season.  For more details on these flights contact Visit.Shetland.org or Flybe.

There 3 airports in Shetland although Sumburgh Airport, found in the south mainland is the main one and used for flight to and from Shetland.   There is also an airport in Scatsta, located in the north mainland.  This airport is used for the oil industry.  Finally, there is a small airport in Tingwall, used for small crafts that fly internally to the small islands in Shetland.

Sumburgh Airport is a twenty minute drive from Gord Self Catering on the main road.  There is a good bus service from Lerwick, passing Cunninsburgh to the airport which connects with most flights.  It is recommended, however, that if you intend to use this service that you check with VisitShetland for Leasks Travel Agents for exact times.

Taxis are also available from the airport.  A fare from the airport to the cottages will cost you approximately £30.00.

By Sea

There is a car ferry that sails from Aberdeen seven days a week, all year, arriving in Lerwick.  The ferry leaves between 5pm and 7pm (depending on what day it is) and arrives into Lerwick the following morning at 7.30am.

The ferry has cabins and reclining chairs available.  There are 2 restaurants, a cinema area, gift shop, bar and small casino area with slot machines.   For more information on the ferry service and fares, contact Northlink Ferries.
